How To Train Your Dragon

Tuesday the 23rd I got a chance to see a special preview of Dreamworks "How To Train Your Dragon" it was great. Yeah its geared toward a little younger crowd so it is a cartoon and it is PG rated. For any one that picked up the candlewickpress's "Dragonolgy" which is a picture book on dragons you should see this movie. I won't spoil the story for you but its a classic. At my special preview they had an art school there made art work from the students, and three class project paper macia dragons. They did a pertty good job on them for 5-10 year olds. I didn't get to see the movie in 3D but I think some of the flight scences and battle scences will look really good in 3D. If you can handle the motion of it. I Highly recomend this movie.

Science Olympid and the Return of Kim

I've told you about the event SKB well the other big event that Rockhurst holds in the spring is the Science Olympid. Unlike SKB which is a game show like event, Sceince Olympid (SO) is a bunch of individual events that get scored and totaled and the school that does the best in the most events wins over all. Although in every event 1-5 place gets an medal or ribbion. This year like every other year SO was held not at Rockhurst but at Penn Valley Community College. I did the same I had been doing with SKB I was the Adminstrative Assistent, and like with this years SKB I was on my own becuase my boss was still out recoving from minor brian surgery. The issues with holding SO at Penn Valley is that none of our staff know anything about Penn Valley and the one person on the committe for SO works there and pertty does the site setup on his own, this makes it hard when things go wrong. As with any complex setup something always goes wrong, most the time we its something simple, but with SO it was rooms, people, and the lack of us being able to help or fix the issues becuase we didn't know the campus or security. But as long as the students have a good time its worth the hassel. And they did so I guess I shouldn't complain about it to much.

Some good news though, my boss Kim got to come back the monday right after SO. She still has some issues with her speach but she is back to being active and she doesn't look so sickly. Which is good becuase she has 2 childern and house hold to run. Plus, I need to get more focused on what I'm going to do after graduation. She was missed by most of the staff, but she feels that when she was gone they have opposed some news rules that she will have to adapt to, but then they may not last since she is back.

SKB

SKB is short for Science Knowledge Bowl. It is an event that Rockhurst has been doing for 26 years. It's like a giant quiz show mixed with the brackets of compaction's. Like every year I've been at Rockhurst I have helped play an important roll behind the scenes for making the event go. It makes for a long several days before hand and an even longer day the day of, but at the end of day it's very fulfilling. This year I even got an unexpected honor of getting to choose the guest speaker for the final rounds. It was pretty cool to be given that honor and responsibility. Oh and I was informed that doing this the last four years was not enough, I unofficially signed a contract when I started with this to be doing it for the rest of my life if the event goes that long. I'm not to sure how I feel about that, good I get to visit Rockhurst every year, Bad what if I can't do it. Oh well, well just have to see what the furture holds.

A Rose Between Two Thorns

This phrase is usally used to discribe a small group sitting in boy, girl, boy order, however I feel like it describes my past weekend well. It all started when I got back to Kansas City Thrusday morning. At the time was expecting to help perpare for a big APO conference that was to be held on the Rockhurst campus. However about 4:30pm what was to be simple preparions became a crisis as Rockhurst backed out on letting have the event on campus. So my Friday- Sunday was spent solving one crisis after another with the help of two of my feinds Mel and Deena. What was supossed to be a fun confernece turned into a nightmare of issues, little sleep, and a lack of balanced meals. In my case these were the throns of my weekend. I have memory of most of sunday night and monday becuase I slept through them trying to recoperate. My Rose from this past weekend was, tuesday, going to hang out with one of my freinds that I don't often get to hang out with. She has a house full of cats and an awsome wii and wii fit plus system. I had an amazing time looking silly playing games with her. In fact I haven't had a chance to laugh like that in along time. I left her house with the biggest smile on my face. I should have had a camera with me, and told her to capture the look on my face. I hope I get to do it again, just with out the few days before it.

They may even be able to put a good word in for me at SIUC, which I hope to apply to this spring for graduate school.

Kennelwood

So if any does read this blog and they live in the st. Louis area and have a cat or dog that are in need of boarding, baths, or doggy day camp. You should check out Kennelwood. I've worked there for the last two summers and the past and current winters. It's a pretty neat place. Although as a dog walker it can be a bit hecktic especially during summer. Winter is pretty slow except right around Christmas so it makes it more fun to go to work because you get to spend more time one on one with the dogs or visit the cats. It is nice to work in a place where anyone that's been there for a year or more really enjoys working with the cats and dogs.

Last Christmas at Rockhurst

It's sad and exciting but this will be my last winter break, last christmas party, last tree decoration, last skb mail stuffing, and last good bye for christmas break. I know I'm going to miss it next year, but at the same time I wonder what I will be doing at this time next year. Maybe I'll have my hands full doing all though things at another job, maybe I'll be in grad school taking finals still, maybe I'll be half way acroos the county getting ready to board a plane to come home, who knows. But I'll never forget my time here at rockhurst.
